How to use them
Each part has its solution folded away. Do the exercise in your notebook and, once you have it, click on the statement to unfold the solution and check it.
The properties of powers and radicals are in section 5.
Radicals
| Radical | $\sqrt[3]{2}$ | $\square$ | $\square$ | $\sqrt{x}$ | $\square$ | $\dfrac{1}{\sqrt[3]{3}}$ |
| Power | $\square$ | $25^{\frac{3}{4}}$ | $3^{-\frac{1}{5}}$ | $\square$ | $16^{\frac{3}{4}}$ | $\square$ |
See the solution
The exponent of the power is a fraction: the numerator is the exponent inside and the denominator is the index.
a) $\sqrt{8}$
b) $\sqrt[3]{16}$
c) $\sqrt[5]{2^{11}}$
$11 = 2 \cdot 5 + 1$: two $2$s come out and one stays inside.
d) $\sqrt[10]{x^{14}}$
At the end the index is simplified: divide index and exponent by $2$.
e) $\sqrt[3]{x^{25}}$
f) $\sqrt[3]{x^{15}}$
a) $\sqrt{a^{3} \cdot 27}$
b) $\sqrt[3]{648}$
c) $\sqrt[3]{3^{6} \cdot 2^{11}}$
d) $\sqrt[5]{-64x^{6}}$
The index is odd, so the minus sign can come out of the root.
e) $\sqrt[3]{\dfrac{81}{x^{5}}}$
f) $\sqrt[5]{\dfrac{1}{64}}$
a) $\sqrt[6]{a^{3}},\ \sqrt[3]{a^{2}},\ \sqrt{a^{3}}$
Common index: $\text{lcm}(6,3,2) = 6$.
b) $\sqrt{a},\ \sqrt[3]{a},\ \sqrt[5]{a}$
Common index: $\text{lcm}(2,3,5) = 30$.
c) $\sqrt[5]{a},\ \sqrt{b^{5}},\ \sqrt{c^{3}}$
Common index: $\text{lcm}(5,2,2) = 10$.
d) $\sqrt{8},\ \sqrt[10]{2},\ \sqrt[5]{16}$
Common index: $\text{lcm}(2,10,5) = 10$.
Operations with radicals
a) $\sqrt[3]{3^{8}} \cdot \sqrt[3]{3^{-5}}$
b) $\sqrt{6} \cdot \sqrt{2^{5}} \cdot \sqrt{24}$
c) $\sqrt[3]{x^{5}} \cdot \sqrt[3]{(2x)^{3}} \cdot \sqrt[3]{2x^{4}}$
d) $\dfrac{\sqrt[5]{64}}{\sqrt[5]{2^{-4}}}$
e) $\dfrac{\sqrt{75}}{\sqrt{48}}$
f) $\sqrt[3]{2^{5}} \cdot 2^{-\frac{2}{3}}$
With powers:
Or with radicals:
a) $\sqrt{8} + \sqrt{18} - \sqrt{32}$
b) $3\sqrt{75} - 5\sqrt{12} - \sqrt{3} + \sqrt{27}$
c) $3\sqrt{32x^{3}} + \sqrt{50x} - \sqrt{200x^{3}} - 2\sqrt{8x}$
Only like radicals can be added: same index and same radicand, here $\sqrt{2x}$.
